Perfect whale watching
Today was just a fantastic day for whale watching in Skjálfandi Bay: The sea was almost as flat as a mirror and the bay was full of life.
On the morning tour we encountered a humpback whale just about 20-30 minutes after we had left Húsavík harbour, a bit south of Lundey, the puffin island. We spent some time with this (obviously very hungry) humpback whale and sailed a bit further out. It didn’t take us long until we were surrounded by a group of white-beaked dolphins. It was really nice to see such a big group of dolphins (probably around 20-25 individuals) around the boat and after our nice dolphin encounter, we decided to take a look at Lundey, the puffin island. There were really a lot of puffins flying around or sitting on the sea surface around the island, but some puffins were already sitting on the island, preparing their nests for the breeding season.
In the afternoon we had probably one of the best tours so far this season: It was three hours of almost non-stop whale watching. We found the same humpback whale again (from the morning tour) and decided to sail further west. In the middle of the bay we encountered a minke whale, then a big group of white-beaked dolphins (maybe the same group from the morning tour?) and as we sailed even further west, we spotted a second humpback whale and at least 3-4 more minke whales close to the mountains. A really great tour in really nice weather conditions!
