The Blue Whales are back!!!
We still have winter weather here in Húsavík and there was quite a lot of snow at the harbour this morning.
When leaving the harbour, we set the course directly towards the area where the minke and humpback whales had been yesterday. As we got closer to that area, we spotted a minke whale and we were able to follow it for a little while. But while watching the minke, we saw a huge spout in the distance, so we decided to check it out. A few minutes later we were able to confirm: The Blue Whales are back in the bay!!! It was really nice to spend some time with the biggest animal on the planet and on two occasions, we had the blue whale very close to the boat.
In the afternoon we first saw a small group of white-beaked dolphins in the middle of the bay. But they were quite difficult and not very “cooperative”, so we sailed further out and were once more rewarded with a nice blue whale. There was even a second blue whale in the area, a bit further away.
