Humpback whale festival!
Today was the first day after the storm and we were happy and excited to head out into Skjálfandi Bay again in search for the whales.
The weather was really nice today, and the sun was shining almost all day long.
We left the harbour at 10:00 full of optimism and the first whales we encountered on the trip were two minke whales in the middle of the bay. One of the minke whales had quite a powerful spout, so we were first not 100% sure about the species, but as we got closer, we could clearly see that it was a minke whale.
After our encounter with the minkes we set the course further out and soon we came across a very nice humpback whale. We spent some time with the humpback and as we sailed even further we were soon surrounded by many more humpback whales – there were whale blows and fluke almost all around us and we guessed that there must have been at least six humpback whales in the area! Really nice!
Also the afternoon trip was very successful and once again we found at least five humpback whales, this time a little bit closer to the mountains than on the morning tour.
