Humpback whales everywhere
The last couple of weeks we have always had a lot of humpback whales here in the bay, but the number of humpback whales that we saw today was once again incredible! We left the harbour at 10:00 onboard “Garðar” and we had already heard from our friends on “Náttfari” (North Sailing’s second biggest boat) about a lot of humpback whales in the northwestern part of the bay. We set the course towards that area and it didn’t take long until we saw whale blows everywhere!
A few minutes later we found ourselves surrounded by at least 6 humpback whales (4 of them swimming together and another “couple” of them a little bit further away), absolutely impressive! We stayed with them for a while, until we saw a big splash further out: a jumping humpback whale! We decided to go there and the humpback whale stopped his breaching activities pretty soon, but during the following 20 minutes, the whale gave us a great show when he (or she?) was tail-slapping and “waving” to us with its big white flippers, right next to the boat!
On the way back we were watching even more humpback whales and enjoyed a nice cup of hot chocolate in beautiful sunny weather.
