A curious humpback
Today I went out with captain Hrólfur and the rest of the crew on Náttfari for both 10:00 and the 13:30 tour. The bay was calm and about half an hour after leaving harbor we encountered our first humpback.
As in the blog posts from the last days the humpbacks have been ruling the bay, literally everywhere we look there is a spout in a dinstance or a fluke rising above surface. Simply amazing.
In the afternoon tour the weather was changing and the eastern wind reaching into the bay. As we headed out towards the area where we were watching the whales in the morning tour we desided to take a quick look at one humpback that suddenly surfaced close to us. And we did definitely not regret that decision! It was the most curious humpback I have met this season! It actually reminded me of all the friendly Minke whales I remember from the early days of North Sailing, spy hopping and circling around the boat for half an hour.
As we then went further out there were more humpbacks, many of which breaching, lobtailing and/or slapping the flippers on the surface. My theory is that they are becoming full and satisfied, reaching the ideal weight after beeing extremely busy feeding from the beginning of the season. So now they can pay more attention to the surroundings, ie. the boats and the curious passengers!

As said, a truly amazing experience with this calm and friendly humpback whale in Skjálfandi Bay.
