Suzan & Lisette: “Our first encounter with a humpback whale”
It was a sunny, bright and rather calm day at sea when we were heading out with our boat „Bjössi Sör“ , guide Baldur and an international crowd of passengers.
After less than an hour, heading from Húsavík harbour to the mountains across Skjálfandi Bay, Baldur made out several whale spouts. From the upper deck I could hear that some of our passengers were really excited, and the closer we got to the whales, the more excitement there was. And then we were literally surrounded by whales. Baldur estimated 12-15 humpbacks and gave up pointing them out, because wherever you turned, there they were. You could either see a spout or the black back riding the waves or the tail before they dived. I have done my share of whale watching, but his moment was awesome!
Suzan Kuiper and her husband Albert and Lisette Borgerhoff Mulder and her husband Jan from the Netherlands were onboard Bjössi Sör that day, and we could tell that they were having a lot of fun!
Q: Suzan and Lisette, is this your first whale watching trip?
A: Yes, it is our first whale watching and this exceeds our expectations by far. So many whales, and they are coming so close to the boat! You don’t know where to look first!
Q: So, did you manage to capture the sightings on your camera?
A: Yes, with so many whales around that was no problem at all.
Q: Did you book your trip just here in Húsavík or was it prebooked?
A: We have booked the complete Iceland trip with Askja Reizen in Holland, they also booked this whale watching trip for us. Our husbands were not excited at all to go to Iceland in the beginning, but now they love it. We are on a 3-week-selfdrive trip around the island, but this whale watching with North Sailing is THE highlight so far. We are so excited.
When we arrived at the harbor we saw some passengers returning from an earlier trip and their faces were not so happy, they looked very serious. And we thought, oh dear, they probably did not see anything. So we were not expecting too much from the trip. But now, this is just amazing, so many humpback whales, and so close.
Q: Maybe some passengers from the earlier tour were just a bit seasick and that was why they were not looking so happy. Because the whales have been here this morning for them to see, too.
Can I take a picture of you and your husbands?
A: Yes, of course!
So, here are smiling and happy faces of Suzan, Albert, Lisette and Jan.
We thank you for your joyful company and wish you a wonderful trip around Iceland and a safe return home.
