Humpbacks, minkes and dolphins!
The whale watching conditions are still very good here in Skjálfandi Bay and today we saw all the three species from yesterday again: Humpback whale, minke whale and white-beaked dolphin.
In the morning we found our first whale only 20 minutes after leaving the harbour: A humpback whale, not far from Húsavík! It was spending a lot of time at the surface, always taking only shallow dives and not diving for more than one minute. We spent some time with this nice humpback whale, before we went further west, into the area where the big feeding frenzy was going on yesterday. As soon as we arrived there we spotted two minke whales feeding among a big group of seabirds and at one point, one of the minke whales was also seen lunge-feeding.
In the afternoon tour we went straight west and were rewarded with three humpback whales close to the mountains. One of them was even tail-slapping a few times, but he stopped as we arrived. We had a nice time with these three whales and as we wanted to set the course back to Húsavík, we ran into a nice and playful group of white-beaked dolphins.
Hopefully these nice conditions will continue during the next days and weeks.
