Four species today
The sun was shining the whole time during both trips and we still have a lot of whales around here in the bay.
In the morning we left the harbour with two boats again (“Náttfari” and “Bjössi Sör”) and set the course to the area where we had seen all the humpback whales yesterday.
The first cetaceans we spotted there was a group of white-beaked dolphins and just right after we found the dolphins, we saw the blow from a humpback whale in the same area. We got very close to the humpback a few times and when leaving the humpback, we took another look at the dolphins. They were absolutely amazing! They stayed with our boat for a long time, always swimming alongside or under the boat, so that everybody could clearly see them swimming under the surface. There was even a second humpback whale coming up between the dolphins and after this nice humpback and dolphin encounter, we set the course back towards Húsavík.
The afternoon tour was also really nice. After leaving the harbour, we crossed the bay and when we arrived in the area close to the mountains, we first spotted a nice group of harbour porpoises and a little later we saw our first minke whale. But this minke came up only once (although quite close to the boat) and disappeared immediately. We kept on sailing and between a huge flock of seabirds we found another minke whale, and then another one, and then even a third one! So there were at least four minke whales around! After some nice minke whale watching we sailed further north and were rewarded with some nice close-up encounters with a humpback whale!
Once very nice whale watching with four species in beautiful weather conditions.
