Blue whale in Skjálfandi Bay!!!
Conditions were perfect this morning: Flat calm sea and almost no wind, and we were quite optimistic when we headed out on “Knörrinn” with 23 passengers.
It took us only a few minutes until we saw our first whale: a humpback whale, quite close to Húsavík harbour. We spent some nice 20-30 minutes watching the humpback and decided to sail further out, in hope to find something else. In these flat conditions we spotted a lot of harbour porpoises and after some searching, we were rewarded with a very nice surprise: the largest creature on earth, a BLUE WHALE!!!
Usually we have these majestic animals here later in the season (from end of May until middle of July), so it was very nice to get an early visit from this individual.
Three species on the morning tour, including the biggest and one of the smallest (the harbour porpoise), fingers crossed that the afternoon tour will be similar, when we are heading out again now to try to find the blue whale again.
UPDATE: We found the blue whale again on the afternoon tour, and we even managed to get some really close-up views.
