The Humpbacks are back!
We went out this morning into the area where we had seen a minke whale yesterday, but even though we were scanning the area carefully, there was no sign of the minke. So we decided to sail a bit further out and that paid off!
From a distance we saw first one, and then a second blow and as we got closer, we realized that it were humpback whales that we had there in front of our boat. A few minutes later, while we were waiting for the two humpback whales to come up again, we saw at least two more whales blowing further away, making it a total of at least four humpback whales (but they could have also been five in the area).
The two humpback whales were really nice and easy to follow, one of them was actually an old friend of ours that had already been here in the bay earlier this summer in August. Nice to see him (or her?) back in Skjálfandi Bay! ;-).
While we were heading for the humpbacks, we also got a really close look at a minke whale, which was also a nice surprise. We spent some time with the two humpbacks that were always surfacing simultaneously close to the boat and they even lifted the fluke at the same moment, a really nice sight! We then left these two humpbacks and went further to check out a third humpback whale. We also got close to that one and a few moments later, we saw a second minke whale.
There must have been a lot of food in the area, as all these whales (4 or 5 humpbacks, 2 minkes) were not far away from each other. Definitely an area that is worth to check out during the next days, let’s hope the whales will stay there for a while!
