Our friend, the humpback
Today I went out on the 13:30 tour with captain Hrólfur and engineer Garðar on boat Garðar. After following some white beaked dolphins for a while, we headed to the area where we had been watching a humpback whale on our erlier tour and there we found him – but he surely was on the go! He went down diving and came up in a far distance, but we didn´t give up, but followed him in hope of seeing him a litte up closer.
And then suddenly, after one of the deeper dives, he came up very close to the boat – as if he did it on purpose. And the next thing we know, is that the humpback whale swims under the boat, coming up on the other side, very close again.. and then he swims under the boat again and comes up on the other side. And that he did for a short while, zigzagging under the boat, or until he took place aside of the boat and swam along with us for quite a distance. What a marvelous sight, seeing him so close, seeing the whole body in the water, just right under the surface! And what a wonderful experience hearing such a big creature draw his breath, within meters, knowing that it was his choise to swim along with us.
There were smiling passangers and crew that stepped offboard Garðar this afternoon!
Huld, guide.
