Garðar, the Mighty
Garðar, the biggest boat of our fleet has finally gotten the permits to use the capacity for as many passenger as she should carry. Therefore, the 10:00 trip today was an historical one, never before has North Sailing sailed with so many passengers in one vessel. Well over 130 people, and a crew counting six, left the harbour in a sunny and calm weather. Long story short, the tour was amazing.
I have to admit one thing. Few years back when the renovations of Garðar started I was really sceptical about the whole thing. Used to the smaller boats, this 27 meters long traditional fishing boat looked like a monster. I remember thinking that she would never be as great and intimate as the other ones.
Man, was I wrong.
My season started very late this year and so far I have only guided 4 tours. And all of them on Garðar. To my surprise, all of them have been great. Not just ordinary great, but excellent! Each and every time I have had the privilege to sail with my good friend, Captain Hrólfur and this guy just never stops to amaze me, his skills with the boats and his nose for finding the whales. Of course all of this helps, but it does not change the fact that Garðar is just an superb boat for whale watching. Quick and agile, roomy and sturdy. I was wrong about this ship, and I am glad.
Today was very sunny and not too windy. We had no problems finding whales and after the six hours of whale watching we had seen four species, Minkes, Humpbacks, Dolphins and a Blue Whale. The Blue came as a surprise, we are used to have them only first part of the summer, but the Bay is unpredictable to say the least.
Great start of the season for me, that‘s for sure!
