The Sail Húsavík Regatta
The high point of Sail Húsavík took place today. “The Regatta”, or the battle of the Sail Boats, started at 11:30. Beforehand, all the boats had prepared and when the shot was fired, close to 20 ships raced for the Buoy about 4 miles out in Skjálfandi Bay, and back. The wind was quite decent and with all sail raised, it was very impressive to see the fleet rush for the win. The bay was at it’s finest, whale watching boats mixed in with the sail boats and the small sail dinghys from the sailing seminar seemed even smaller next to their bigger brothers and sisters. The sun was shining and the breeze was warm, which made it all even more delightful.
As far as wise men know this might have been the first race of it’s kind here in Iceland, but Regattas are custom in coastal cultural festival throughout the world. Surely it will not be the last.
The results of the Regatta were as follows: 1st prize, Hildur (Iceland), 2nd place, Pirola (Germany) and 3rd place, Activ (Germany).
Tonight the festival reaches the high point, huge concert at the harbour area and celebration of a very successful Sail Húsavík 2011.
