Amazing humpbacks.
Today I had a first. It’s amazing that even I, having worked as a whale watching guide for almost three years now, am still having firsts on our trips. Today was the first time I saw a humpback whale spy-hopping. I went out at 10:00 with captain Hreiðar, deckhand Kormákur and a boatful of passengers. The trip started badly when we realized there was a problem with the toilet that required me and Kormákur to take on the role of plumbers. We managed to fix the toilet after some work and I went to the top of the wheelhouse to help the captain look for whales. After only a short while we spotted some white-beaked dolphins. By then we had already heard about some humpbacks from some fishermen in the bay. We checked the dolphins out for a short time and then headed out to find the humpbacks. After sailing only for a short time we found two humpbacks together that were really calm we followed them around for some time and they came up really close to the boat. Then after having surfaced right in front of the boat and swam past us one of them stuck his head out of the water for a short time as if to check the boat out before it headed back down into the water; raising it’s fluke high in the air. It was simply incredible.
