Incredible whales in good weather
Ok, so maybe generally speaking todays weather isn’t that great, but compared to the weather we’ve had through most of June it was great. I managed two trips without putting on the windbreaker, hat and gloves. The trips themselves were pretty amazing as well. The first trip I went on Náttfari with cpt. Hrólfur, engineer Tomas, and guide Ditta. We hadn’t sailed very long when we got a call from one of our other boats who went out earlier about two humpback whales not very far from the harbour. We hurried over there and found the two humpbacks swimming along together. They were very calm and surfaced really close the boat a few times. Then as more boats were gathering around these whales we decided to head out and seek some more whales. After sailing only a short while we again got word from the crew of one of our other boats which had found a blue whale. We immediatly headed over there as we were under the impression that the blue whales had left the bay already. When we got there, we found the blue whale and managed to show it pretty close to the boat. While we were showing the blue whale we saw one more humpback in the distance Then unfortunately we were starting to run low on time so we started to head back to the harbour but on the way back we passed the humpback duo again and they were still calm and curious.
On the next trip we had a lot fewer passengers so Ditta didn’t come along for that trip. We headed out and found the two humpbacks again. They were still doing their thing, swimming around in circles together and as curious as ever. We decided to head out and try our luck with the blue whale again despite hearing from the other boats that it had disappeared since we had left the area. Once we got there we didn’t find the blue whale again but we found two more humpbacks, a minke whale, and I managed to spot a lonely harbour porpoise although it disappeared quickly and I don’t think any of the passengers managed to see it. Since we had some extra time we decided to check on the humpback duo again and served the hot chocolate there. While we were serving the hot chocolate the humpbacks were really playfull; rolling over and lobtailing. We then headed back to the harbour after another incredibly successful day.
