Two blue whales and a breaching humpback

For the ten o’clock trip this morning there was so much attendance that we went out on two boats, Náttfari and Knörrinn. There wasn’t sun but the sea was calm and little wind. On Náttari we set our course northwest because we had heard about some blue whales a bit far out there. Soon we saw a powerful spout and then another one not so far away but it couldn’t be the same blue whale, there were two of them in the same area. We got a very good look at one of them it came up quite near us and headed towards us so it was just few meters away from the boat. Then it rolled over and waved its flipper, we stayed with this blue whale for a while but then we got news about a humpback whale not so far away. When we came nearer to the area where the humpback whale was supposed to be we looked all around us and just by the boat it suddenly breached out of the water and was half in the air, it was very beautiful. After a very good trip we headed back to Húsavík.

At the one o’clock trip the wind was increasing a bit but it didn’t stop us from finding a blue whale again. It wasn’t so keen to come quite so near the boat as in the previous trip but we saw it several times.
