Icelandic National Day
Today is Icelandic National Day, although the whales in Skjálfandi Bay seem not to care too much. We went out this morning in a northern wind, the air was cold and moist. In the Mid-Bay we met a couple of White Beaked Dolphins, but they were not in a mood for a show, so we decided to head a bit further out and search for the Humpbacks. Just as I dropped the word “Humpback” – a Humpback Whale suddenly emerged right next to the boat! It was a delightful surprice! After taking a good look at the Humpback, we headed still a bit further out and there we saw another Humpback, one that was very busy feeding at the surface. It is amazing to see theese big creatures feed, as they open the mouth wide open, more often than not making splashes and rapid moves, slapping the flippers on the surface or even turning and twisting right under the surface. After having watched for a while, we headed back home, having almost all forgotten about the cold!
In the later trips today we saw, in addition to the Humpbacks and a few Harbour Porpoises, a big school of the White Beaked Dolphins, feeding and playing very close to the boat. There were alot of kalfs in the group and they swam along and in front of the boat for quite a while, seeming to like all of the attention.
