A Calm Humpback in a Thick Fog
As we left the harbour in the midmorning sun, we were quite optimistic. Although, the sea was still a little rough after the stormy weather of last days, the sight was good. Until.. until we got to the western side of the bay, were the fog (that had been forecasted) appeard.
At one moment in our trip we had all kinds of weather; sun shining, fog getting closer and thicker and a cold northern wind blowing. Iceland in a nutshell! Still we managed to see Harbour Porpoises and a small school of White Beaked Dolphins.
In our 13:30 trip, the fog was even thicker and the northern wind blowing even more, but out we went with 15 passengers, ready to look for some whales. And we didn´t have to look for long, in the mid-bay, there was a calm, or even semi-dormant Humpback at the surface. We could get quite close to the Humpback without disturbing it and watched it come up several times to breath, never in a rush, and then after several breaths it finally lifted the fluke, as if to close the show. It was a fantastic moment, in a rough sea with the wind blowing around, surrounded by thick fog, there was this calm Humpback taking it´s time to befriend us!
