Perfect whale watching on Friday 13th
This morning was one of the best whale watching tours we have had this season so far. We went out in perfect whale watching conditions and it didn’t take us long to spot the blow from a humpback whale. We went closer and while we were waiting for the humpback whale to come up again, we saw a small group of white-beaked dolphins not too far away from us. We decided to have a look at the dolphins and after a short while, we went back to watch the humpback whale. We got some really nice views and suddenly, a minke whale popped up in the same area. On one occasion, we even saw both the humpback whale and the minke whale coming up right in front of the boat at the same moment. After watching the minke and the humpback whale for a while, we sailed further south, where we had seen a second humpback whale. When getting closer, we realised that this whale was an old friend: he had already been here in the bay for several weeks in September and October last year.
All in all, a fantastic tour! We were watching marine mammals constantly for about two hours and when we came back into the harbour, we had a lot of smiling and excited passengers leaving our boat.
Yes, whoever believes Friday the 13th is a cursed day definitely has never been whale watching on these days! We just got back from the afternoon tour and it was a great success, just like the morning tour.
We saw 2 humpback whales which we managed to follow for quite a while and get very close to. Then later on, close to the Creek Mountains we found a minke whale, just as we were giving up and heading back to Húsavík, but we got a few close-up looks and then saw another one further away!
