2 Humpback Whales and Minke Whales as well.
While getting ready for the 1:30 PM trip I heard that the crew that went out at 10:00 had spotted one of the Humpbacks. That was certainly joyous news. The playful Humpback is a crowd favourite and always a delight. I didn’t dare hope we’d be so lucky to see them both but thankfully we did.
Captain Hrólfur set the course directly west and soon we saw a powerful spout in the distance. It was the Humpback! The whale was in a playful mood and threw its powerful body to and fro and slapped the surface with the tail until diving and then lifting the fluke high in the air. With the sunlight reflecting of the glittering sea, this was a beautiful sight.
We then headed further west and saw two Minke Whales busy feeding and several Harbour Porpoises as well. Just when we were heading home we saw a powerful spout farther away to the north. We had found the other Humpback! This one was slightly bigger than the other and was not as playful but at one time surfaced really close to the boat and swam leisurely beside us for several magnificent seconds. We could see the huge, white pectoral fins through the water. They can get almost 6 metre long!
It truly was a beautiful and enjoyable day.
