A breaching Humpback whale!
When we left the harbour this morning it was still quite foggy in the bay, but after some searching we managed to find the humpback whale again, the same one that has been around now for the last two days. We got some very close looks at this whale and after a while, we left the humpback whale and sailed west, closer to the mountains. A fishing boat had seen a minke whale there so we were hoping to get to see a second whale species as well. The weather conditions were not really good in the western part of the bay and even though we did our best, we did not find the minke whale.
We went out again at 13:30 and it did not take us long to find the humpback whale. Much to the delight of our passengers we got some very close looks at the whale. We took a look at Lundey, the puffin island, where more and more puffins start nesting during these days and on the way back from Lundey towards Húsavík, we ran into the humpback whale again. We were watching him for a short while and then, all of a sudden, he jumped completely out of the water! A few minutes later he was even breaching a second time, and when we came back to the harbour, everybody on board was happy to have witnessed something that is not an everyday sight.
