The whale festival goes on
Today we just had another wonderful day in Skjàlfandi Bay. In conditions like this, it is simply a lot of fun to be out at sea.
Captain Hròlfur and I went out at 10:00 on “Bjössi Sör” in calm seas and good conditions (it was just a bit foggy further out) and we managed to find four different species of whales.
First we found two really calm minke whales and when we left them we decided to sail a bit further out to see if we can find the humpback whales again. After sailing for a while we spotted a blow in a distance and when we got closer we realized that there were in fact two humpback whales in the area.
We spent some time with them and while we were waiting for one of them to surface again, we could also spot some harbour porpoises.
On the way back to the harbour we found a nice group of white-beaked dolphins. They were quite playful and were also bow-riding for a few minutes, much to the delight of our passengers.
In the afternoon we went out again on a special trip and in addition to two humpback whales (one of them was actually a new individual, that has not been sighted here before), we saw white-beaked dolphins almost everywhere in the bay. It is always hard to estimate their number, but I guess there were at least 100-150 of them around.
