Minkes in the rare southern wind
The weather today was great; Unusual southern breeze and sun as the day wore on. The sea was almost completely still in the morning as we set out on the first tour of the day. We found the minke whales in the west of the bay, where they have been seen in the last few day. Accompanying them were great big flocks of seabirds, fulmar, kittiwake, black back gulls, arctic skuas and even puffins, most likely on their last few days here with us before they leave us this summer.
The minke whales started out very calm, most likely resting, but then in later trips picked up their pace a little. They came very close to the boats at times, one even rolling over in the surface which some lucky passengers caught photos of!
We also spotted some white beaked dolphins today. Their story was the same; Docile and resting in the morning but picking up speed in the afternoon.
