Minke Whales, Dolphins and an interesting surprise!
Since we knew that a Blue Whale had been spotted the night before we immediately went in search of it this morning but to no avail, the Big Blue had apparently departed. During the search we met Minke whales and Dolphins who were very lively and not without reason.
The bay is full of Herring! Our captains are seasoned fishermen and say they have never seen so much of “the Silver of the Sea” as we icelanders used to call the Herring that was hunted extensively in the sixties. The Minke Whales and the Dolphins seemed to happy with these new visitors and were frantically eating. The Dolphins were using their “jumping and landing with a big splash” – hunting technique which is always great fun to watch.
Skjálfandi Bay is apparently teeming with life and hopefully the bigger whales will pay us a visit soon.
