Three breaching whales in one day!
I went on the first NS-2 tour of the season today. NS-2 is a trip where we go out on the schooner Haukur and go whale-and bird watching. Then of course we put up the sails as well!
The weather wasn´t the best and the sea was a bit rough, but like one optimistic passenger said in the end of the tour; at least it didn´t rain! That‘s the spirit!
The morning tour on Haukur is at 09:30 and we had some 9 passengers. We were three in the crew; me, captain Óli and Felix, a German guy that has just started working for North Sailing and was on its first tour! Welcome Felix!
We met a lot of nice dolphins on this tour and one even breached a couple of times! We cruised around the bay searching for something bigger but without success.
In the end of the tour the sun started to shine and weather was a lot better. It continued to get better throughout the day and by 16:00, when we headed out again for the afternoon trip the weather was fantastic.
When we had sailed for some time I saw a big white splash pretty far away and realized immediately that it was a breaching humpback whale! All the 16 passengers got to see it because it breached so many times. It had stopped when we got closer but we got a good look at it when it came up to breathe a couple of times.
As rare as it is to see a whale breaching these people on board Haukur this afternoon really were in for a treat today because when we were heading back to the harbor a minke whale breached right in front of the boat! And of course I was downstairs making the hot chocolate exactly at that moment so I didn´t see it!
Three breaching whales today (remember, the dolphin in the morning trip) and you can´t really ask for much more than that! 🙂
