The Humpbacks and the waves
When I woke up this morning and heard the rain slamming on my window I quickly jumped out of bed and looked out. It was foggy, wet and windy.. truly a great day for whale watching!!
Inspite of the weather a decision was made about going out at 09:00 to „check it out“. To see if there were any whales that wanted to put on a show for us in these weather conditions.
Me and Þórdís went as guides and the captain on board Bjössi Sör this beautiful morning was my grandfather, captain Hreiðar.
We had only a few passengers, 13 brave people which got to experience an Icelandic adventure in a great way, what‘ s better than going out at sea with the wind and rain in your face, trying to see some whales?!?
Well, at first it didn‘t look very promising. When we got out of the harbour the waves started to get deeper and deeper and it was pouring rain. But we are tough (and stubborn) and we decided not to go home until we would find at least one whale to show the passengers!
I wish someone had taken a photo of me and Þórdís sitting there on top of the wheelhouse with the wind and rain in our face, not being able to look straight forward but still searching for blows og black backs in the wild sea. Belive me, it‘s quite difficult!
But then, all of a sudden Þórdís shouted out: „A blow straight forward!“ ..and there it was, this lovely humpback whale waiting for us to find him. We followed it around for a while, trying our best to show it to the people and we managed to do that actually very good. Then while we were waiting for the humpback to come up after a deep-dive we spotted another blow a bit further away!
We managed to see that humpback whale also really close up a couple of times and after that we decided to head back to Húsavík, really happy about the success we had inspite of the crazy weather! J
