Sei whale or not?
Another sunny day and even better than yesterday. We went out on Náttfari at ten o‘clock, me, captain Hrólfur and Hörður as an engineer. After sailing for maybe 20 minutes Hörður thought he saw some movement far away, south of Húsavík in the inner part of the bay. We have not seen much of the whales in that part of the bay for the last few weeks so we were not sure about spending time sailing all the way south. But we did and man, that did pay off. Bunch of Minke whales, at one time I counted four in sight at the same time.
Sei whale? No it turned out to be a huge Minke whale!
Then we kept on little further and then I saw a whale jump in the distance. Too bad no one else saw that and when we closed in it turned out to be a Humback whale, the same we saw yesterday.
After taking a close look at the Humpback we turned north and then found what I think is the peak of this wonderful day. At first we thougt we were looking at a Minke but something felt strange. After seeing it closer it looked to big to be a Minke and Hrólfur pointed out it could be a Sei whale. Me and Christian 1st from the Whale museum took some great pictures (his are better than mine) of the animal and he is going to examine them and see if he can verify it as a Sei whale or not.
Then we went out on Knörrinn this afternoon and had a great trip, Minkes, Humpback and again, the suspected Sei whale. On this trip Christian 2nd, also from the museum took pictures (again, better than mine) and now we have two Christians on the issue*.
I´m off tomorrow, Himmis first day this season. Again, this is going to be a great summer.
bibbi, guide.
*Update: The results are in, the Sei whale is in fact a Minke whale, the two Christians along with Heimir have examined the pictures. Disapointing maybe but one huge Minke!
